Q1. Tell us about your journey – how and why you chose to become a calligrapher?
In 2017, during my tenure at TBWA, I embraced Calligraphy as a personal pursuit. Being separated from my family at the time, I sought a meaningful way to occupy my time. Calligraphy held a special place in my heart, having been my area of specialization during college. The transformative nature of this art form became evident as it provided a sense of calm and focus. Reflecting on that decision, I consider it one of the most impactful choices I’ve made in my life.
Q2. We would love to know a bit about your creative process.
The essence of ‘FUN’ is integral to the creative process, a sentiment I’m sure we all can relate to. Without it, work can feel mundane and stressful. My approach to every project is adaptable and versatile, tailored to the specific script I’m working with. The choice of tools, from paper to ink, plays a significant role in shaping the outcome. Each script brings its own unique impact to the work I produce.
Q3. Where do you get inspiration to create so many new and different calligraphy designs?
In addition to my daily practice sessions and teaching responsibilities, I dedicate significant time to exploring and refining my own techniques and styles, akin to examining different facets of a coin. Having a ‘study’ mindset enables systematic learning, allowing me to grasp the intricacies and constraints inherent in each script. This foundation helps me to innovate and develop a distinctive personal style. I draw inspiration from the works of 18th-century Master calligraphers and the invaluable insights found in their rare books.
Q4. You have designed your own calligraphy tools. Tell us about them.
The script in which I gained my excellence necessitates a specialised tool known as the ‘Oblique Holder.’ When I embarked on my journey to master this script, India lacked the necessary resources and art supply stores, leaving me now choice but to source these tools from the USA. The challenges of procurement and the delays impeded my progress significantly. It was during this period that I decided to create my own line of products, with the thought and vision to help fellow aspiring Indian calligraphers, eliminating the need for prolonged waits in their learning journey. Presently, I am proud to be the sole Indian supplier of a diverse range of high-quality ‘Calligraphy Tools’ to the USA. Life comes full circle. These tools are readily available on my website – My products serve as a bridge for aspiring and professional calligraphers worldwide.
Q5. Do you also conduct calligraphy sessions?
Indeed! I am a Calligraphy Educator. Over the years, I have had the privilege of teaching more than 5000 students globally, both through online platforms and in person. My passion for sharing knowledge has taken me across continents, where I have had the opportunity to share the skills and wisdom I have acquired over the years. A particular highlight of my career was being invited to teach for the prestigious organization IAMPETH in their ‘Virtual’ sessions not once, but twice consecutively. It is a great honour to be recognized as the only Indian to have received this opportunity.
Q6. How to start the journey of becoming a calligrapher?
The biggest myth that would question the ability to take up calligraphy is if your handwriting is good. Let me tell you that it has no relation whatsoever!
To embark on the journey of becoming a calligrapher, begin by knowing which script you wish to begin with.
